There is nothing worth the wear of winning, but laughter and the love of friends.

Introduction

These rules were designed to enable me to refight fictional AWI battles with some degree of connection. I don't claim any originality but have engineered everything to fit my prejudices. I like quick and simple rules played in a spirit of friendly competition so if you want examples of play for 'rule 3.2 subsection d paragraph 9' look elsewhere.

If you have any suggestions or queries feel free to email me prefixing the subject with HOWE, else I will assume I'm being spammed.

Tabletop Rules

These rules has been developed from Loose Files and American Scramble for use with 6mm figures. It is not impossible to refight actual battles with these rules but they are directed towards my campaign so you will have to make some compromises. I have two sets for your amusement, both called Howe's About That Then to confuse you. Loose Files v5 is closer to the original set and includes the DP rules which I simplified under Howe v6 and the DISORDER rule. Anyway, both have been tested and work so the choice is yours!

The following casualty sheets were devised after the first major battle. They should include all the units you could possibly field in one go. I would ignore the 3 SPs for guns; just say 1 casualty = KO, as per the original Loose Files, and ignore morale tests (they stay by the guns regardless!). I'll amend the sheets when I can be bothered!

Campaign Rules

I've nicked from a few board games, noticably Richard Berg's 'Rebellion in the Colonies', Rob Markham's 'Give Me Liberty' and 'Liberty' from Columbia Games. They are not designed to cover every eventuality so where they are deficient just use your knowledge of the period to figure out a solution. If I find some holes through play I will post a new version. I've added a PowerPoint file with ready-printed command counters. Suggest printing them onto glossy photo paper and sticking them to card with double-sided tape. The Order of battle can be laminated and used as a campaign and tabletop casualty record.

Campaign Map

The map from Columbia Games' Liberty is just the ticket and you can get it for $25 (about £13 in proper money) if you don't want all the bits from the game. You can use it as the basis for tabletop terrain (or pay over £100 for a copy of Rand McNally's 'Atlas of the American Revolution' - gorgeous!).

You will need to add the Halifax and Florida Holding Boxes and delete the French West Indies box. Then you are ready to go!
